V-MAX ® TEMPOä

You can do this yourself. It is very easy. Just place silicon over all the holes in the case and place in a strong clear bag, tape closed and fix to the saddle.

HOW TO USE THE TEMP DEVICE

V-MAXÒ TEMPO(TM) ON-BOARD DIGITAL TEMP DEVICE

This unit is a Radio Shack Indoor-Outdoor thermometer. It has been modified to provide limited "water-resistant" protection. We placed a sealer on all the case opening and switches. The unit is placed in the vinyl pouch for additional protection. It is not fancy but it works and it is affordable.

The unit is set to OUTDOOR mode. The small probe at the end of the lead is the active sensor.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Attach the pouch to the front of your saddle using a shoestring.

2. Route the probe lead under the saddle pad. Place it on the right side. Insure the probe is fully under the pad.

Place it below the saddle bars. The probe is small and will not cause a bump if you position it away from the bars

3. The display is always on.

4. You can "calibrate" the unit.

Carry a standard glass or digital thermometer.

Ride for about an hour. Insure the horse is HOT (work hard). Obtain a reading of about 101 to 102 degrees.

Stop and get off the horse. Take the rectal temp with the standard thermometer

Compare and note the reading on the unit. Normally the rectal temp will be about 1.5 degrees higher then the temp under the pad

5. The ‘safe’ MAX limits are about 102 to 103 degrees. This is about 103 to 104 rectal temp.

6. Battery life is about 1 to 2 years. To put in a new battery, remove the sealer from the battery door on the unit. Install a new battery. Re-seal the door. Put back in case and re-tape with a water-resistant tape.

7. The accuracy of this gauge has been questioned. The manufacture states it is +/- 3 degrees. Of COURSE it is not an ABSOLUTE accurate device. We use this device for a RELATIVE indication of temperature CHANGES. The readings obtained are the values for the device and your horse application. I look for DEVIATIONS. I believe this device will advise you of heat related problems with your horse. If you require a very accurate device there are other units that cost $150 and higher.

Enjoy this LOW cost device.

We have used it for many years. It provides a lot of information to support the heart rate reading and heat management.

Know when to put on water or just wait for a recovery. Know when your horse is experiencing heat management problem resulting from metabolic issues.
